Services for driving biogas reactors

Isona Oy offers expert services for biogas plants. Isona is specialized in improving the function of biogas reactors with the aim of making its customers' reactors work as good and reliably as possible.

Isona has an analytical laboratory which supports the expert services. Hence, we do provide laboratory services but for us the laboratory analyses and results represent the tip of the iceberg. The numbers obtained in laboratory tests do not necessarily reveal the state of a biogas reactor.

We help you throughout the entire chain, from sampling to the correct actions.

Analyses

Feed analyses

  • Total Solids (TS) and Volatile Solids (VS)
  • Viscosity of a sludge reactor feed
  • Methane potential

Digestate analyses

  • Total Solids (TS) and Volatile Solids (VS)

  • pH and alkalinity

  • Ammonium - nitrogen (NH4-N)

  • Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA)

  • Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), soluble

Other analyses

  • Reject water analyses and treatment recommendations

  • Testing of different polymers to improve the performance of a decanter centrifuge

Survey (Mapping)

It can be hard for a company to the gather data related the current state of the prosess and to process the data such that it can be utilized for planning investments.

The survey gathers all essential information into a single report, which can be used to paln e.g. the upcoming investements. When there is an up-to-date picture of the current state of the site, unnecessary investments can be avoided and the financial efforts can be focused more effectively.

The survey report provides information on the current state of the site, the bottle necks and the suitablitity of the equipment as part of the whole system and functioning process.

What are your benefits?

Increase feed volume

Increase biogas yield

Less problems, less downtime

How?

Isona company

The story behind Σ

The company’s name (Isona) is a finnish word meaning ”as grown-up” referring to kids wondering what they will do when they are grown-ups. Isona is Ville’s and Pekka’s (and later also Alex’s) outlook on the question: At what kind of company and with whom we would like to work?

The sigma replacing ”s” in Isona’s logo comes from Pekka’s love for the Greek islands and his experience in physics and maths, where Greek letters are frequently used. The whole name was actually meant to be written with Greek letters (ΙΣΩΝΑ or ισωνα). The Σ means a sum in maths, and Isona is simply a sum of Alex, Ville and Pekka. The sizing of Σ is also intentional, referring to ”grown-up”.

Isona’s background

Isona was founded in 2021 because Ville and Pekka wanted to start a company together where they could work as ¨grown-ups¨. The first idea quickly collapsed and Isona was left waiting for better times and circumstances.

In 2024, Ville and Alex met in the hustle and bustle of a start-up company. After Alex left the company, they talked about their backgrounds and they noticed they have common knowledge and interests in biogas plants. Alex thought that expert services should be offered to biogas plants to improve the operation of the reactors. In Ville's opinion, an expert company that relies on external laboratories is too dependent on others, so the idea of combining expert and analytical services was born. In Ville's opinion, one more element was missing to complete the puzzle, so Pekka was asked to join in.

Alex has a strong background in environmental technology. He worked at the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE). Afterwards, while working at a biogas plant in Finland, Alex built a biogas plant laboratory and developed a patent that deals with reject water treatment. Moreover, Alex also possesses skills in water/analytical chemistry as well as he has a deep understanding of biogas reactors and municipal/industrial wastewater treatment.
